What to know about Stavyshche

Stavyshche is an old town on the Hnylyi Tikych River: according to its encyclopedia card it was founded in 1525 and received Magdeburg rights in 1635. Its best-known episode is the defence of 1664, when the town rose against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and withstood Stefan Czarniecki's siege for months, surrendering to hunger only on 30 September (10 October). In 1774 the Sejm gave Stavyshche to Crown Hetman Franciszek Ksawery Branicki; the Branickis owned it until 1918, and in 1911 Count Branicki began building its hospital, completed in 1923.

Famous people of Stavyshche

Natives include Foreign Minister of Ukraine Anatolii Zlenko (1938–2021), diplomat and translator Maksym Slavynskyi (1868–1945), UNR Army general Antin Puzytskyi (1877–1945) and Olympic rowing silver medallist Nina Antoniuk (born 1956). Serhii Tsymbal (1986–2014), born here, was posthumously named Hero of Ukraine, and the main street bears his name.

The town lies on the left bank of the Hnylyi Tikych; legend links its name to the many ponds along the river. Highlights are the 19th-century Stavyshchenskyi landscape park, the early-19th-century building of the local history museum, Count Branicki's former hospital (1911), the Church of St John the Baptist and Kolos stadium.
