What to know about Stebnyk

Stebnyk first appears in writing in January 1433, when King W?adys?aw Jagie??o pledged three villages near Drohobych, including Istebnyk, to the nobleman W?odko of ?wi?cice. In spring 1440 the settlement was moved to German law, and its present name appears in documents of 1521. Salt was always its wealth: by the late 17th century the local saltworks produced 10,000 barrels a year, and under Austria the Stebnyk Salina was the largest in Eastern Galicia. The Drohobych–Truskavets railway reached the town in 1910–1911, the Polimineral potash company was formed in 1946, and Stebnyk became a town on 21 January 1978.
