Stryi: six centuries of history

Stryi's first officially recognised written mention dates from 1385, when it was already the centre of a volost. On 21 October 1431 King W?adys?aw II Jagie??o allowed the knight Zaklika Tar?o to refound the town under Magdeburg rights, renewed by Casimir IV in 1460. Its rise in the late 17th century is linked to Stryi starost and later King of Poland John III Sobieski. In 1914 the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen legion was born here, and on 14 March 1990 Stryi became the first Ukrainian city to raise the blue-and-yellow flag. In May 2024 an Alley of Glory honouring fallen defenders from the Stryi area was opened.

Notable people of Stryi

Stryi is the birthplace of His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk) (born 1970), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church since 2011, philosopher Ivan Mirchuk (1891–1961) and traveller Kazimierz Nowak (1897–1937), the first person to cross Africa alone from north to south and back.

Stryi today

The town stands on the left bank of the Stryi River, 67 km from Lviv and close to Morshyn, Truskavets and Slavske. Landmarks include the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1425), St Michael's Church (1912), the People's House (1901), the Verkhovyna local history museum and Shevchenko Park. A major railway junction, Stryi was nicknamed the city of eternal light for its gas lamps that were never switched off, and since 2015 more than 50 magnolias have been planted here.
