A short history of Talne

Talne probably takes its name from the Talne River, today's Talianka, mentioned as early as 1593; the Turkic word tal means willow. The town itself is recorded from 1646, and in 1664 it was held by a nobleman named Vilha. From 1797 Talne was a market town of Uman County, and Taras Shevchenko visited it in 1845. Count Shuvalov's hunting palace in French Renaissance style was built here in 1893–1903.

Notable people of Talne

Talne is the birthplace of Mischa Elman (1891–1967), one of the most celebrated violinists of the 20th century, and of actor and TV host Petro Vesklyarov (1911–1994), known as Grandpa Panas. A plaque on School No. 1 honours native Yurii Parashchuk (1966–2014), Hero of Ukraine and defender of the Maidan.

Places every local knows

The town spreads along both banks of the Hirskyi Tikych and its tributary the Talianka, 144 km from Cherkasy. Highlights are the Shuvalov Palace with Talne Park, St Anne's Church (1702), the Church of Sts Peter and Paul and Ukraine's only monument to four hetmans, unveiled in 2013. Hasidic pilgrims visit the grave of tzaddik David Twersky in the old Jewish cemetery. We deliver bouquets to any address in Talne — home, office or a festive table.
