Tarutyne: a little history

The settlement was founded in 1814 as Anchokrak, after one of the names of the Bakhmutka River; its first settlers were Germans from the Kingdom of Poland and Poles. Later named Tarutyne, it became the economic and cultural centre of the Akkerman Germans, and from 1824 it hosted large horse and grain fairs known as the Bessarabian Fairs. In 1886 the colony had 2,498 residents, a Lutheran church, a school, a hospital, tobacco and spinning mills, two mineral-water works and 13 wine cellars. It became an urban-type settlement in 1957 and has been officially named Bessarabske since 26 September 2024.

Notable people of Tarutyne

Valentyn Bershadskyi (1980–2023) and Artur Hrama (1991–2023), natives and participants of the Russian-Ukrainian war, were named honorary citizens of the Tarutyne community.

Places every local knows

The town lies on the Bakhmutka River in southern Bessarabia, the Budjak. Its main church is the Church of Sts Peter and Paul; a water supply built by German colonists is still in use, and the park by the House of Culture hosts the Bessarabian Fair, revived in 2004. Tarutyne is known for winemaking, with dry and dessert wines bottled here, and for its cheese factory, while a rearing black wild horse adorns its coat of arms. We deliver bouquets to any address in town.
