Ternivka: from Cossack sloboda to mining town

In Zaporozhian Sich times, the winter homesteads here belonged to the Samara palanka. The sloboda of Ternivka was founded in 1775 by order of the Azov governor; legend says thick blackthorn (tern) thickets were cleared for it, giving the town its name. St John the Theologian Church was built in 1781 and the first primary school opened in 1846. Coal deposits discovered in 1950 changed everything: the first mine opened in 1964, and Ternivka became a town in 1976.

Notable people

Hurdler Anastasiya Rabchenyuk was born in Ternivka in 1983; she specialised in the 400 m hurdles, competed at the 2008 Olympic Games and holds the title of Master of Sport of International Class.

Ternivka today

The town lies on the Velyka Ternivka River where it joins the Samara, 20 km east of Pavlohrad, and is one of the coal-mining centres of the Western Donbas, home to the Ternivska and Zakhidno-Donbaska mines and a mining vocational lyceum.
