Tetiiv: from the Ostrozkyi princes to today

Tetiiv appears in documents of 1514, when Lithuanian nobles Ivan and Andrii Koshla held its lands. Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi took it in 1596 and his son Janusz in 1602; at Janusz's request Tetiiv received Magdeburg rights and a coat of arms on 4 May 1606. In 1648 locals formed a Cossack company under Fesko Fedchenko, and Bohdan Khmelnytskyi stopped here on his Volhynian campaign. On 19 July 1768 Seredynenko's haidamaky took the town, and in 1787 the last Polish king, Stanis?aw August, stayed here.

Famous people of Tetiiv

Tetiiv is the birthplace of Israeli poet, translator and playwright Yaakov Orland (1914–2002), historian Anatolii Bairakivskyi (born 1935), after whom a central street is named, and physicist David Fishman, Hero of Socialist Labour.

Tetiiv today

The town stands on both banks of the Roska River. Its key monument is the Sviejkowski family chapel, a landmark of national importance, beside the remains of the 1820s Church of the Assumption. The town park has a 2016 monument to the 410th anniversary of Magdeburg rights and a sign marking the old town hall; also worth seeing are the Krasna Mohyla burial mound, the Porkhun mill and the local history museum.
