What to know about Trostianets

Trostianets was founded in 1660 by settlers from Right-Bank Ukraine. In 1720 the land passed to Tymofii Nadarzhynskyi, a native of the town; the Annunciation Church was built in 1744–1749 and his sons built the Round Yard in 1749. In 1874 sugar magnate Leopold Koenig bought the estate, built sugar factories and was the first to bring telephone and electric lighting here. Trostianets became a town on 12 July 1940. It was liberated on 26 March 2022, a memorial honours the soldiers of the 93rd Kholodnyi Yar Brigade who freed it, and on 30 September 2025 it was named a Hero City of Ukraine.

Names linked to Trostianets

Writer Mykola Khvylovyi (1893–1933) was born here. In summer 1864 Pyotr Tchaikovsky stayed in Trostianets and wrote his first symphonic work, the overture to Ostrovsky's play The Storm.

Trostianets today

The town lies on the Boromlia River amid large forests. Trostianets Park in the Neskuchne tract, a landscape monument of national importance, holds the ruins of the Grotto of the Nymphs; Koenig's manor houses the Trostianets museum and exhibition centre. Other sights include the Round Yard, the Annunciation Church and the Ascension Church with its 40-metre bell tower. The town is home to the Ukraina chocolate factory.
