Tyvriv: A Short History

The first written mention of Tyvriv dates from 1505, when King Alexander Jagiellon confirmed Fedko Dashkevych's ownership of the village, granted to his grandfather Herman Dashkevych by Grand Duke Vytautas for service. Tatars destroyed the settlement in the late 15th century. In 1744 Micha? Kaletynskyi received a privilege for Thursday markets and fairs. By 1892 Tyvriv was a volost centre with 2,835 residents, 26 fairs a year, four water mills and a ferry across the Bug. Until 17 July 2020 it was the centre of Tyvriv district.

People Linked to Tyvriv

The composers Kyrylo Stetsenko and Mykola Leontovych taught at the Tyvriv spiritual school, where the bass singer Hlib Shandrovskyi studied. Larysa Ratushna (1921–1944), a member of the Vinnytsia underground, was born here, as was Honoured Journalist Volodymyr Ocheretnyi (1938–2005).

Landmarks and Local Features

Tyvriv stands on the Southern Buh, and the Cheremoshna River flows through it. Landmarks include the 18th-century Dominican Church and Monastery of St Michael the Archangel, the Yaroshynskyi Palace with the remains of its park, the Church of the Ascension and a water mill on the Buh. The Memorial to the Martyrs for the Faith of the 20th Century was consecrated in the church on 1 September 2018. Couriers deliver flowers to any part of Tyvriv.
