Ukrainka: from Ihnativka to a power engineers' town

The earliest written record of the settlement is a deed of King Sigismund I dated 5 March 1541, which calls it the village of Ihnativka. That same year its owner Zinoviia Yatskivska gave it to the Vydubychi Monastery, and in 1656 Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi granted it to the Kyiv Pechersk Monastery. By 1709 Hetman Ivan Skoropadskyi's charter called the place Zlodiivka. In spring 1845 Taras Shevchenko passed through, crossing by ferry from Divych-Hora to Mykolynky. Renamed Stolypino in 1912, the village became Ukrainka in 1921. The first unit of the Trypillia thermal power plant started in 1969, and Ukrainka grew into the power engineers' town, gaining town status on 19 November 1979.

Notable people of Ukrainka

Children's writer Vasyl Chukhlib (1941–1997), winner of the Lesia Ukrainka Prize, lived and worked here in 1969–1983 and wrote several of his books in the town; a memorial plaque marks his house. His son, historian Taras Chukhlib, is a Doctor of Historical Sciences. The town also honours Oleksandr Rachynskyi (1979–2014), posthumously promoted to major, of the 25th Separate Motorised Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The town sits on the right bank of the Dnipro, 40 km downstream from Kyiv, bordered by the Kozynka and Stuhna rivers. Landmarks include Shevchenko Square, Divych-Hora hill, the Stuhna forest reserve and St Nicholas Church.
