Pivdenne: from a railway settlement to a town

Pivdenne grew out of a settlement founded on 26 August 1906 by employees of the Southern Railway. Nearby lay the older village of Komarivka, dating from the 17th century, which had 582 residents in 1864 and 2,240 in 1914. In 1963 the urban-type settlements of Komarivka and Pivdenne were merged to form the town.

People of Pivdenne

Yurii Knorozov (1922–2019), historian and ethnographer, researcher of the Maya script and a USSR State Prize laureate, was born here. Serhii Bondarenko, a baritone of the Kyiv National Academic Operetta Theatre and People's Artist of Ukraine, is also linked to the town.

The town stands on the left bank of the Merefa River, 9 km south-east of Kharkiv. Local landmarks include the Church of the Holy Spirit, Victory Park with a mass grave of soldiers, and the Pivdenne Technological Lyceum. Local businesses include a brush factory and a dairy.
