Pivdennoukrainsk: from the Cossack Hard to a power-engineers' town

The area's history goes back to the 18th century, when Zaporozhian Cossacks built the Hard fortress a kilometre south of today's town — the centre of the Buh-Hard palanka, with a ferry across the Southern Buh, a customs post and a guard of 300 Cossacks. The modern town was founded on 26 April 1976 as Kostiantynivka-2 for the builders of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant and on 2 April 1987 became the city of Yuzhnoukrainsk. On 6 September 1991 the blue-and-yellow flag was officially raised here for the first time in Mykolaiv Oblast; it is now kept in the town history museum. On 9 October 2024 the Verkhovna Rada renamed the town Pivdennoukrainsk to comply with Ukrainian language norms.

Notable people of Pivdennoukrainsk

Natives include poet and serviceman Sashko Obrii (Oleksandr Kucherenko, born 1991), winner of the Vasyl Symonenko Prize, and photojournalist Yelyzaveta Servatynska (born 1997). Honoured Artist of Ukraine Yurii Nahulko (born 1954), who headed the plant's general construction contractor, is also linked to the town.

Pivdennoukrainsk today

The town stands on the Southern Buh as the satellite of the South Ukraine NPP; the river's rocky banks attract climbers and water-sports fans, and the Tashlyk Reservoir lies to the east. Landmarks include the Church of Christ the Saviour, the Church of Sts Peter and Paul, the All Saints of the Ukrainian People church (consecrated 2018), the Enerhetyk Palace of Culture and the town history museum.
