Uzyn: from Uzenytsia to a cosmonaut's hometown

Uzyn is first recorded in 1590 as Uzenytsia. In 1773 cavalry captain Temberski was authorised to found a sloboda on the Uzyn River, so the village became known as Tembershchyna, a name locals still use. A wooden St Nicholas Church was built in 1842, and a sugar factory founded in 1899 produced about 7% of Ukraine's sugar by 1913. Uzyn became an urban-type settlement in 1956 and a town on 25 August 1971. It was liberated on 6 January 1944 by the 180th Rifle Division; 19 soldiers who fell here rest in a mass grave in the centre.

Famous people of Uzyn

Uzyn's most famous native is cosmonaut Pavlo Popovych (1930–2009), twice Hero of the Soviet Union, who commanded Vostok 4 in the world's first group space flight on 12 August 1962. Musician and theologian Heorhii Avhustynovych (1784–1842) and composer Liudmyla Yurina were also born here.

Uzyn today

The town stretches along the Uzynka River in the Ros basin. For decades it was known for its long-range aviation airbase, disbanded in 1993–2000, whose housing estate passed to the town; a Tu-95U aircraft monument recalls that era. Other landmarks are the Dormition Church, Glory Park, monuments to Pavlo Popovych and the Zoria cinema, while the Uzyn sugar plant still operates. We deliver flowers to any part of Uzyn.
