What to know about Varva
Varva is known from 1079: it is linked to the chronicle fortress of Varyn, where Volodymyr Monomakh defeated the Polovtsians. It was destroyed by the Mongols in 1239 and ravaged by Mengli I Giray's horde in 1482. In the 17th century it belonged to the Vyshnevetsky princes, and from 1649 it was a company town of the Pryluky Regiment. In 1658 it withstood a six-week siege by the Muscovite commander Romodanovsky. An oil and gas field was discovered in the area in 1959.
Osyp Bodiansky and others
Osyp Bodiansky (1808–1877), philologist, historian and writer, was born in Varva, and a monument to him stands in the town.
Varva today
The town lies on the left bank of the Udai River and takes its name from the Varvytsia. On its north-western edge rises Zamkova Hora, a hillfort of the 11th–13th centuries. Landmarks include the Varva Zemstvo School building (1915), designed by Vasyl Krychevsky, an oil-derrick monument marking the start of oil production, the Varva Local History Museum and the Pisky recreation area.
