Vasylkiv, a town with chronicle history

Vasylkiv dates its founding to 988, when Volodymyr the Great built a fortress here to guard Kyiv from the south and named it Vasyliv after his baptismal name. In 1157 it passed to Vasylko Yuriiovych, son of Yurii Dolgorukiy, who gave the town its present name. In 1586 the Kyiv Pechersk Monastery received a charter for the town from Stephen B?thory, and Vasylkiv obtained Magdeburg rights. In 1748 the first quarantine house in the Russian Empire opened here, and in 1797 the town became a district centre.

Notable people of Vasylkiv

St. Theodosius of the Caves, founder of the Kyiv Pechersk Monastery, was born in Vasyliv in 1009. Pavlo Popovych, the first cosmonaut of Ukrainian origin, was an honorary citizen, and singer Jerry Heil is among the modern names linked to the town. Hero of Ukraine Dmytro Honcharenko, volunteer and participant of the Revolution of Dignity, was born, lived and is buried here.

Vasylkiv today

The town sits on the Stuhna River 20 km south-west of Kyiv. Its landmarks include the baroque Cathedral of Saints Anthony and Theodosius (1758), St. Nicholas Church (1792), the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1859), the 1817 district offices building and a 10th–13th century hillfort with remains of the Serpent's Wall.
