Velykodolynske in brief
Velykodolynske was founded in 1802 by German colonists on the site of Akkarzha and named Grossliebenthal, “the great valley of love”. In 1881 a large meteorite fell near the colony and was named after it. By 1886 Grossliebenthal was a volost centre with 3,869 residents, a church, two schools, a post station, a steam mill and an annual fair on 1 May. It later bore the name Velyka Akkarzha and received its present name in 1957.

Journalist and Narodnaya Volya activist Yevhen Semenov (1861–1944) and musician Kostiantyn Bieliaiev (1934–2009) were born here.
Local landmarks
The settlement lies 19 km from Odesa, and its railway station is still called Akkarzha. The old Grossliebenthal Kirche recalls its German past, and a mass grave honours the soldiers who fell liberating the village on 13 April 1944. Winemaking is part of local life, reflected in the blue bunch of grapes on the 2008 coat of arms, and a Late Palaeolithic site has been found here.
