Verkhivtseve in brief

The area has been settled since antiquity: a Bronze Age settlement, a burial ground and kurgans were found here, and local historian Oleksandr Pol collected its stone idols. The modern town dates from 1884, when a workers' settlement grew up at Liubomyrivka station on the Donbas — Kryvbas railway. The station became a junction in December 1888 and on 1 January 1904 was renamed after Oleksandr Verkhovtsev, the first head of the Katerynynska Railway. Liberated on 23 October 1943, Verkhivtseve became a town on 30 October 1956.
