Verkhovyna: from Zhabie to the Hutsul capital

The settlement, then called Zhabie, is first recorded on 17 August 1424 in a charter of Grand Duke ?vitrigaila. Many villagers joined the opryshky bands of Oleksa Dovbush, and on 16 September 1885 the first peasant assembly in Galicia was held here. Ivan Franko called Zhabie the "Hutsul capital" in 1884, and in 1962 it was renamed Verkhovyna after the many peaks around it. Native Petro Fedorchuk (1995–2022) was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine.

People of Verkhovyna

From 1991 the Cheremosh ensemble was led by Roman Kumlyk (1948–2014), one of Ukraine's best-known fiddlers. Poet, artist and choreographer Olena Herdan (1916) was born here, and writer Stanis?aw Vincenz, author of "On the High Uplands", is linked to the village.

Sights and local flavour

Verkhovyna lies 620 m above sea level on the Chornyi Cheremosh River. Visitors find the Regional Museum of Hutsul Land, the Roman Kumlyk museum, house-museums of the films "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" and "Annychka", and the Churches of St Anne and of the Dormition. The Zhabiievskyi Potik hamlet is nicknamed the "Hutsul Hollywood", and rafting and skiing are on offer. We deliver flowers to any address in Verkhovyna.
