Vylkove, the Ukrainian Venice of the Danube delta

Vylkove was founded in 1746 as Posad Lypovanske and became a town in 1762. Its first settlers were Old Believer Lipovans fleeing Patriarch Nikon's church reform, followed by Nekrasov Cossacks and, after 1775, Zaporozhian Cossacks. The name comes from the fork where the Danube splits into several channels. An Old Believer monastery of Saints Peter and Paul stood here from the mid-19th century until 1948, and a chapel now marks its memory.

The town sits in the Ukrainian part of the Danube delta, the last settlement before the river meets the Black Sea. Canals called eryky run along its streets, so boats are more common than cars. Sights include the Old Believer St Nicholas Church and Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Sharonov Museum of Everyday Life, the Fisherman monument and the Bulat Okudzhava monument.
