Vyshhorod: a town from the chronicles

Vyshhorod enters the chronicles in 946, when the Tale of Bygone Years calls it the town of Princess Olha, and Constantine Porphyrogenitus lists it as Vousegrade among the Rus' towns sending ships to Constantinople. In the 11th century Princes Borys and Hlib, the first Rus' saints, were buried here; in 1115 their relics were moved to a stone church completed by Volodymyr Monomakh. From 1078, under Prince Yaropolk Iziaslavych, Vyshhorod was the seat of an appanage principality that minted its own coins, until Batu's troops destroyed it in 1240. The Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant revived it: Vyshhorod became a town again in 1968 and a district centre in 1973.

Names linked to Vyshhorod

Taras Shevchenko visited Vyshhorod in 1843 and 1846, and the trips echo in his poem The Monk. Writer and local historian Oleksandr Drobakha spent most of his life here, and industrialist Semen Potashnyk, who lived and worked in the town, became an honorary citizen.

The town sits on the right bank of the Dnipro, with the Kyiv Reservoir to the east. Its main landmark is the Church of Saints Borys and Hlib (1861–1863), built on the foundations of the medieval church, next to the hillfort of old Vyshhorod, a monument of national importance. The historical and cultural reserve in the Kliukva House (1905) holds the Ancient Vyshhorod archaeological exhibition and a pottery museum; Shevchenko Square has a monument to Saints Borys and Hlib, and a memorial sign to the hydro plant stands by the dam.
