Vyzhnytsia, from a Moldavian chronicle to Smerichka

Vyzhnytsia's reliable history begins in 1501 with a mention in a Moldavian chronicle. In 1767 the Moldavian hospodar granted it a charter as a market town. In the 19th century it became the seat of the renowned Vizhnitz Hasidic dynasty. Vyzhnytsia received town status in 1940, and in the 1960s the ensemble Smerichka was founded here.

Vyzhnytsia and famous names

Hollywood director and producer Otto Preminger (1905–1986) was born in Vyzhnytsia. Singer Nazarii Yaremchuk (1951–1995) of the band Smerichka is linked with the town, as is Menachem Mendel Hager, the first Vizhnitz Rebbe and founder of the dynasty.

Vyzhnytsia is a resort town in the Carpathian foothills on the Cheremosh River, next to Vyzhnytskyi National Nature Park. Sights include St Michael's Church (1910–1924), the Church of Sts Peter and Paul (1876), St Demetrius Church (1883), the Town Hall and the Shkribliak College of Applied Arts (1905).
