Vilnohirsk: from the first buildings to today

Vilnohirsk is one of the region's youngest towns, built to develop a zircon-rutile-ilmenite titanium ore deposit. In April 1956 a decision was taken to build a mining and metallurgical plant with a workers' settlement, and 12 August 1956 is the official founding date. On 16 June 1958 the settlement was named Vilnohirsk after the nearby Vilni Khutory station and the plant, whose first director was Viktor Varen. Since 2020 it has been the centre of a hromada in Kamianske district.

Notable people of Vilnohirsk

Vilnohirsk is the birthplace of Vice Admiral Serhii Haiduk (b. 1963), commander of the Ukrainian Navy in 2014–2016. Residents also honour mortar battery commander Oleh Bandurchenko (1959–2022), who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The town lies near the source of the Samotkan River. Key sights include the Metalurh Palace of Culture, the Alley of Glory (2005), the Anchor monument to the cargo ship Vilnohirsk, the monument to Viktor Varen and a bust of Taras Shevchenko. The Vilnohirsk Mining and Metallurgical Plant is one of Ukraine's leading producers of rare-metal concentrates, alongside a glassworks and a reinforced-concrete plant.
