Vilniansk: a short history
The modern town grew out of Sofiivka, a settlement that appeared in 1873 beside a railway station. Since 1966 it has been called Vilniansk, after the Vilnianka River. German colonists Klassen and Heinrich Neufeld founded a cast-iron farm machinery plant here, which passed entirely to Neufeld in 1891. Vilniansk has had town status since 1964.

The town lies on the Vilnianka, 18–25 km from Zaporizhzhia. Landmarks include St Volodymyr Cathedral (1902), the Klassen–Neufeld factory buildings with an Art Nouveau factory school, the Memorial of Glory, a T-34 tank monument, Yubileinyi Park and Shevchenko Park.
