Volodarka: from the chronicle town of Volodarev to today

Volodarka dates back to 1150, when the chronicle mentions Volodarev in connection with Prince Volodymyrko Volodarovych of Halych marching to support Yurii Dolgorukii. Remains of the old Rus hillfort still stand in the centre, on the left bank of the Ros opposite the mouth of the Torts. In the mid-15th century Volodarka belonged to Kyiv Castle, and a 1471 survey counted only 10 households. In 1750 local-born haidamaka leader Martyn Teslia raised a band and captured Volodarka and Bila Tserkva. The settlement became a self-governing town in 1812, and in 1840 its cloth mill produced 4,000 arshins of cloth and flannel.

Famous names of Volodarka

Poet and prose writer Valentyna Nevinchana (1924–1981) was born in Volodarka. Also linked to it are Lavro Kempe (1901–1981), a Black Zaporozhians Regiment Cossack who became an actor and director, and writer and war correspondent Anton Mykhailevskyi (1943–2020). Locals honour the memory of soldier Roman Bubliienko (1993–2017), who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Volodarka today

The settlement spreads across both banks of the Ros, 35 km south-west of Bila Tserkva, on the R-17 and R-18 roads. Worth seeing are the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross — a former Catholic church of 1815 — the Church of the Dormition consecrated in 2016 and the local history museum on Kotsiubynskoho Street with over 1,500 exhibits.
