A short history of Vorzel

Vorzel is a young dacha settlement: in the early 20th century, near the village of Mykhailivka at kilometre 37 of the Kyiv–Kovel railway, landowner Yosyp Pekhovskyi had the forest divided into 229 plots. It was first to be called Olenivka after his wife, then Krynychky, before the name Vorzel was chosen. The neighbouring dacha settlement of Kicheieve later became part of it. The first sanatorium opened in 1932, and from 1938 Vorzel was a resort of national importance. The settlement was liberated on 1 April 2022.

Names linked to Vorzel

Writer Valerian Pidmohylnyi lived here in 1921–1923, poet Yevhen Pluzhnyk came here for treatment, composer Borys Liatoshynskyi had a house on Klenova Street, and early military aviator Heorhii Horshkov lived at 56 Kurortna Street.

Vorzel today

Academics called Vorzel the "Ukrainian Kislovodsk" for its pine-forest climate. Its symbols are the Uvarova House, now a children's arts centre, and a tulip tree planted in 1914 and about 30 m tall. Nearby are the 85-hectare Vorzelskyi forest reserve, a birch grove, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the Transfiguration Church. A courier will deliver flowers anywhere in Vorzel.

The settlement lies on the Kyiv–Kovel line, and a handy landmark is the Vorzel halt with the Church of Saints Peter and Paul opposite (21 Kurortna Street). Flowers are often ordered to the Irpin Maternity Hospital, which is actually in Vorzel at 22 Klenova Street, and to the Uvarova House. Central Kyiv is about 28 km away.
