Voznesensk: from Cossack Sokoly to a Hero City

Voznesensk traces its roots to the Cossack settlement of Sokoly, part and later the centre of the Buhohard palanka of the Zaporozhian Host (1734–1775), with the Sokolyna crossing over the Southern Bug. During the Russo-Turkish war the chancellery of the Buh Cossack Regiment was based here. In 1795 Voznesensk was founded nearby as the centre of Voznesensk vicegerency and named after the Feast of the Ascension. On 15 April 1920 the Black Zaporozhians of the Ukrainian People's Army under Petro Diachenko stormed the Voznesensk railway junction. The settlement received town status in 1938.

Names linked to Voznesensk

Natives include illustrator Yevhen Kybryk (1906–1978), actor Dmytro Franko (1913–1982), born in Natiahailivka, now part of the town, poet Yosyp Strotskyi (1923–2011), known as Zoreslav, and table tennis player Iryna Shynkarova (born 2005), bronze medallist at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. In spring 2022 two weeks of fighting for Voznesensk ended in victory for Ukrainian forces, and on 1 October 2025 the town was awarded the title Hero City of Ukraine.

Voznesensk today

The town lies where the Mertvovod River flows into the Southern Bug, above large freshwater lakes that supply drinking water, while two wells produce mineral water. Popular places include the Maryina Roshcha protected grove, Sich Glory Park, Taras Shevchenko Park and the Dzherelo spring nature monument.
