Zastavna: from first mention to today

Excavations in 1965 revealed a Bronze Age settlement here, and an Old Rus hillfort of the 12th–13th centuries was unearthed within the town. Zastavna first appears in writing in 1589, in a charter noting that one of steward Vrinchan's estates bordered on it. Its name is linked either to a toll post (zastava) at the Sovytsia crossing or to the ponds around the settlement. In 1637 half of Zastavna was bought by Yurashkovych, in 1782 it passed to Turkul, and in 1831 to Vartarasevych. A primary school opened in 1844, from 1905 Zastavna was a district town, and it has held town status since 1940.

Names linked to Zastavna

The town's best-known native is painter Mykola Ivasiuk (1865–1937), author of The Entry of Bohdan Khmelnytsky into Kyiv, whose family house still stands. Architect Omelian Yurchuk, writer Valentyn Tarnavskyi and obstetrician Nina Oliinyk were also born here, and folk woodcarver Dmytro Yurchuk worked in Zastavna from 1901 to 1964.

Landmarks and local character

Zastavna lies on the right bank of the Dniester, crossed by the Sovytsia River, with eight ponds within town limits. Sights include the Ivasiuk family house, the local history museum, the Dzherelo ethnographic museum, the 2001 Taras Shevchenko monument on the central square, an arboretum and a historic park.
