Zelenodolsk: a town that grew with a power plant

Zelenodolsk began with the construction of Kryvyi Rih Power Plant-2, whose project the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR approved on 31 January 1961. The name of the future settlement was confirmed on 7 October 1961, and by the end of the year builders had moved into the first temporary houses. It became an urban-type settlement in 1962, the first power unit started in 1965, and Zelenodolsk received town status in 1993. In Soviet times it was nicknamed the "settlement of youth", as most of its residents were young people.

Zelenodolsk today

The town stands on the shore of the Zelenodolsk reservoir, where a rowing training base is located. Its cultural centre is the Yuvileinyi Palace of Culture, home to the Druzhba children's and youth festival and the Zelenodolsk Zorepad pop festival; the Zernyatko dance ensemble was founded there in 1998. Landmarks include the Church of St Basil the Great, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the "Woman with Doves" monument. In 2025 the French town of Sceaux became its partner town.
