Zghurivka: from a potash settlement to an arboretum

Zghurivka began with potash: in 1585–1590 Prince Kostiantyn Vasyl Ostrozkyi, starosta of Pereiaslav, founded a settlement on the Supii River to produce it, and one version links the name to zghur, the hardened earth left in potash kilns. The quarters of Bairaky and Kozakivka still recall that era, and a Zghurivka Cossack captain, Matvii Romanovych, is recorded in 1649. The village appears on Guillaume de Beauplan's 1631 map, belonged to Hetman Kyrylo Rozumovskyi from 1762 and passed to Count Arkadii Kochubei in 1824, who built his manor here. Taras Shevchenko mentioned Zghurivka in a letter of 20 August 1859.

People of Zghurivka

Animation artist and director Alla Hrachova, Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine (1996), and Yurii Olenenko, Minister of Culture of the Ukrainian SSR and later Ukraine's ambassador to Estonia, were born here. Singer Oleksandr Vasylenko (b. 1952), soloist of the Kyiv Camerata and People's Artist of Ukraine, spent his childhood in Zghurivka.

Zghurivka today

The village lies on the left bank of the Supii River, 32 km north of Yahotyn station. Its pride is the 325-hectare Zghurivka Arboretum, laid out by Arkadii Kochubei around his palace in 1837, with the Zavodskyi and Morianka ponds nearby. Other sights include the Pamiat (Memory) Second World War museum, the Church of the Transfiguration consecrated in 2017 and the monument to Mykola Mikhnovskyi unveiled in 2020.
