Zhovkva, an ideal Renaissance town

Zhovkva's written history begins in the 15th century with the village of Vynnyky. In 1594–1600 Crown Hetman Stanis?aw ???kiewski founded a fortified town and castle here, laid out by architect Pawe? Szcz??liwy on the model of Renaissance “ideal cities”. The town received Magdeburg rights in 1603, and from 1678 the castle was a residence of King John III Sobieski. A printing house was founded in 1690 by Amsterdam printer Uri Phoebus ha-Levi, and the Zhovkva school of painting and woodcarving shaped regional Baroque art. Hetman Ivan Mazepa stayed here in April 1707, and in 1994 the State Historical and Architectural Reserve was created.
