Zmiiv: from the first mention to today
Zmiiv appears in the Book of the Great Drawing in 1627, and 1640 is considered its official founding date. The Tatars seized the settlement, but Cossacks led by Kindrat Sulyma recaptured it. In 1657 Zmiiv became a county centre, and in 1668 an uprising led by the Cossack otaman Ivan Sirko broke out here. The town received city status in 1797, and in 1803 Emperor Alexander I confirmed its coat of arms with a crowned golden serpent. A paper factory opened in 1892 and the Zmiiv power station in 1960.
Notable people of Zmiiv
The Ukrainian painter Oleksandr Viezhev (1865–1918) was born in Zmiiv, as was the test pilot and cosmonaut Ihor Volk (1937–2017).
