Znamianka: from a railway station to a town
Znamianka began in 1869 as a station on the Odesa–Kharkiv railway. Trains started running to Mykolaiv in 1873 and to Fastiv in 1876, and a new locomotive depot building was completed in 1883. From the 1890s to the early 1910s the station was a major grain hub, with volumes growing from 600,000 to 5 million poods a year. Znamianka received town status in 1938.
Znamianka today
Znamianka is a big railway junction where the Kyiv–Mykolaiv, Kyiv–Dnipro and Kremenchuk–Kropyvnytskyi lines cross. Its landmarks include the memorial to steam locomotive EU 683-21, a T-34 tank memorial, an obelisk to those killed in the Second World War and Chornobyl memorial signs. Oaks 300 to 400 years old grow in the town. A courier will deliver flowers to any district of Znamianka.
