Zolotonosha in brief

Zolotonosha was first recorded in 1576, in the will of Volhynian voivode Prince Bohush Koretskyi. By 1616 it was a town surrounded by a rampart, with weekly markets and annual fairs, and from 1625 it was home to the Zolotonosha Cossack company of the Cherkasy Regiment. The town received Magdeburg rights in 1635, passed to Prince Yarema Vyshnevetskyi in 1640 and became a county town in 1781. A distillery was built in 1896, and the Bakhmach–Odesa railway reached Zolotonosha in 1912. The town was liberated on 22 September 1943.

Names linked to Zolotonosha

Locals are proud of chess grandmaster and world-title challenger Isaak Boleslavskyi (1919–1977), biochemist Oleksii Bakh (1857–1946) and actor Mykhailo Holubovych (1943–2023). Hryhorii Skovoroda visited in the 1750s and Taras Shevchenko in 1845. Zolotonosha-born border guard Roman Hrybov distinguished himself in the defence of Snake Island.

Landmarks and local highlights

Zolotonosha lies on the Zolotonoshka River, 30 km from Cherkasy, at the junction of the H08 and H16 highways; scholars link its name to golden mica glittering in the sandy riverbed. Late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings survive, and highlights include the Transfiguration Church of the Krasnohirskyi Monastery (1767–1771) by Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi, the Dormition Cathedral (1909), the Ponomarenko local history museum, the arboretum and the 1896 Zlatohor distillery building.
