Pohreby: from a voivode’s seal to the present day

Pohreby’s past runs deep: at the Lany site on the Desna, archaeologists studied a Mesolithic settlement with a bronze bracelet and fragments of female figurines. It was inhabited in princely times too — the seal of Ratybor, a voivode of Volodymyr Monomakh, was found here. The first written record is the 1545 inventory of Kyiv Castle; later the village belonged to the Kyiv company of the Kyiv Cossack regiment. Local legend links the name to “poruby”, border hideouts guarding the land and river route from Chernihiv to Kyiv. The Church of the Dormition, built in 1896, gave rise to the village school.

Famous people of Pohreby

Actress Taisiia Lytvynenko (1935–2025), People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR at Lviv’s Zankovetska Theatre, was born here, as were physicist Oleksandr Kutsai (1964–2017), poet Varvara Hrynko and writer Serhii Nehoda. Historian and Helsinki Group member Mykhailo Melnyk (1944–1979) lived and is buried here. The village honours its native Junior Sergeant Roman Mykhalchenko (1977–2022), posthumously awarded the Order for Courage, 3rd class.

Pohreby lies 2 km north of Kyiv’s Vyhurivshchyna-Troieshchyna, between mixed forest and Desna meadows, and holds both the lowest (about 93 m) and highest (149.9 m) points of Brovary District.
