Pushcha-Vodytsia: from princely hunts to a resort inside Kyiv

The forest outside ancient Kyiv appears in chronicles of the early 11th century, when Prince Volodymyr hunted here in 1009–1010. The name joins “pushcha”, a dense forest, with the small Vodytsia stream, which no longer exists. In 1571 King Sigismund II Augustus let Kyiv burghers gather firewood here, and in 1793 the Senate handed the area to the city. On merchant elder Mykola Chokolov’s proposal, a dacha settlement of 600 plots, 7 streets and 16 “lines” appeared in 1893, while doctors F. Yanovskyi and R. Rubinshtein opened the first sanatoriums. A tram line through the forest arrived in 1904. The settlement joined Kyiv’s Obolonskyi District on 14 March 2002.

Names linked to Pushcha-Vodytsia

Poet Oleh Olzhych lived and studied here in 1917–1923; School No. 104 now bears his name. Architect Vladyslav Horodetskyi designed the 1913 chapel, and actress Nataliia Uzhvii initiated the Stage Veterans’ Home in 1959. Two-time world fencing champion Yurii Chyzh lives here.

Pushcha-Vodytsia today

The resort stretches along the Horenka and Koturka rivers in pine forest covering about 70% of the area, with the Sapsaiv, Miskyi, Horashchykha, Dvirets and Karachun ponds. Landmarks include the wooden Church of St Seraphim of Sarov (1908–1910), Horodetskyi’s chapel and Pushcha-Vodytsia Park; some 40 sanatoriums operate here.
